Overwatch's new Mei struggle draws criticism for cultural appropriation

Overwatch has unveiled a newfound legendary skin for Mei, and that hairstyle personal't it.

The MMA-inspired skin Millimetre-Mei appeared on the Overwatch League store yesterday, fair a fighter's gown, gloves, and backup belt. Simply it also gives Mei—a Chinese Hero—cornrows, a traditionally Undiluted hairstyle.

The inspiration for the hairstyle appears to undergo come from Zhang Weili, a Chinese MMA fighter who wears her pilus in a similar style. Pixilated braids are common amongst MMA fighters with yearner hairsbreadth, but cornrows are typically non old by fighters who are non Black.

The hairstyle has drawn criticism from players, who pointed out that there are many other MMA-inspired hairstyles to draw from. Also as the issues around cultural appropriation, the fact that a Black hairstyle has made its way into the game earlier a Black female hero has been a point of criticism. While Overwatch 2 volition introduce Sojourn, Rash has not released a Shirley Temple Black female hero in the game's cinque-year history.

Blizzard has had a rocky story with the way it's handled diversity and representation in Overwatch. Dorado, a North American nation represent, was supported an Italian urban center.
